Arts & Lifestyle Conjecture: Mindfulness Now
According to data from travel research firm MMGY, road trips have been rising in popularity (Elliott, 2019). As such, teaching children how to soothe themselves while their parents engage with a long drive has become more important than ever. In a conversation with Masters of Social Work student Hannah Seitz I learned that one of the most effective ways to induce focus and mindfulness from children is by having them observe simple elements of their environment. Some examples include counting how many objects are in a room, what textures they can feel, and watching their breathing. Translating and teaching these strategies could lead to more self-sufficiency when it comes to self-soothing, reducing the strain on parents.

To this end I'd like to propose the Mindfulness Now feature for Honda vehicles. Functioning as equal parts entertainment, game, and educational tool the program activates during long car rides to engage in mindfulness activities with passengers. These activities range from counting cars to asking the viewer to rationalize their environment. Passengers will use these techniques in the moment and hopefully continue using them, creating a long-term solution to emotional distress.
