Playful by Design: Engaging Kids on the Move

Playful by Design: Engaging Kids on the Move
(ArtLens Studio, n.d.)

Exploring the ArtLens Studio, in person, at the Cleveland Museum of Art, made me think about how interactive technology could transform the backseat experience.

Play, create, connect, and dive deeper into the CMA’s collection in ArtLens Studio.
ArtLens Studio is for the young and young at heart, fostering a lifetime connection to the museum through joyful, creative exploration of the collection. The activities are designed to help users begin a relationship to the collection through artwork-centered play.
ArtLens Studio provides a unique introduction to the museum’s collection while building appreciation and the foundations of visual literacy for the next generation of art connoisseurs. ArtLens Studio uses cutting-edge technology to give visitors of all ages the chance to use movement and play to connect to the collection. Visitors are exposed to a range of artwork through creative and active prompts. The space, filled with whimsy and fun, enhances the visitors’ experience of the entire museum. Interactives are designed for ages 3 to 103; younger children are welcome to participate with a parent. (ArtLens Studio, n.d.)

I found the digital tools, like the Collage Maker, Pottery Wheel, and Portrait Maker, to be playful yet purposeful. Providing an outlet for kids that centers their focus around creativity and craft, instead of passive distractions. The tactile and visual elements of these activities could significantly help to maintain attention while also encouraging learning and imaginative exploration.

If we imagine these same types of interactive, sensory-driven technologies in a car, they could reframe how children feel about travel. Shifting away from their experiences of restless waiting into more of an engaging journey. This would allow children to visually express themselves, practice coordination, or even learn through play while on the road. These experiences also show how design utilized for play can shape mood and behavior, ideally channeling a sense of calm and curiosity. This kind of thoughtful backseat design could significantly benefit car rides, for both the parent and child.
