Cleveland Clinic flies into the future with Beachwood drone deliveries
“This is the first long-term, established prescription drug drone delivery program in the country, according to the Cleveland Clinic” (Cohen, 2026).
“The program is particularly helpful for older adults who do not want to drive to the pharmacy or parents who have a hard time getting out of the house with young children, a representative for Zipline said” (Cohen, 2026).
“Wolkoff, who has received two drone deliveries, said the program will be good for people who cannot leave their house or who have trouble accessing their mailbox.
It can also be helpful for patients who forget to order their medication in time and need it quickly” (Cohen, 2026).
“‘Typically, we’d have to call a courier,’ he said. ‘We’re talking about hours or days using our traditional systems. We can now get a package to a patient within, really, minutes’” (Cohen, 2026).
“‘The drone service is an add-on service that just gives us more flexibility in how we take care of our patients,’ he said” (Cohen, 2026).
Drone deliveries are increasingly going live across the country. This implementation at the Cleveland Clinic shows that the tech not only works, but is also used and wanted by real consumers.
This article made me consider how my solutions could serve not only the people who need to drive hours to reach medical service, but also how my ideas could apply simply to people who cannot reach their driveway. As well, as noted in the article the drone delivery is not an all encompassing solution. It is simply an additional add on service that gives both the patients and providers more flexibility. In my capstone design, adding an extra level of service to existing methods could be life saving for patients, even if there are already solutions out there like mail delivery. Especially while feeling overwhelmed at so many medical solutions that already exist, small changes can make a huge difference to patients.
