Decorating Lunch Bags for Hungry Children
Lunch bags decorated by Kids' Meals volunteer Nelda Sturm

This blog article from Kids’ Meals explores the personal impact of lunch-bag decorating on both the children experiencing food insecurity and the volunteers who add personal artistic touches to each bag. It provides an example of an initiative designed to address food insecurity through community volunteerism while bringing an element of creativity and personal connection to the delivery of meals. The organization focuses on battling the effects of poverty on children’s health specifically within the Houston community.

Kids’ Meals is ending childhood hunger by delivering free, healthy meals to the doorsteps of Greater Houston’s hungriest preschool-aged children and, through collaboration, providing their families with resources to help end the cycle of poverty (About Us - Kids” Meals Inc., 2025).

The organization was created to support vulnerable children whose families struggled to consistently provide adequate meals but who fell outside the eligibility requirements of existing government food assistance programs.

Preschool-aged children often fall through the gap of social services addressing food insecurity. We address the hunger and food insecurity for children ages 5 and under who are not only at a critical developmental stage but cannot access school-based free meal programs (About Us - Kids” Meals Inc., 2025).
Kids’ Meals is the ONLY home meal delivery program in the nation for poverty-stricken preschool-aged children. Each weekday, we deliver over 13,000 free, healthy meals to Houston’s hungriest preschool-aged children. When school is out, every child up to age 18 in these homes also receives a healthy meal from Kids’ Meals – that’s over 20,000 meals per day (About Us - Kids” Meals Inc., 2025).

Touching on the impact the initiative has on 87 year old bag-decorating volunteer Nelda Sturm:

One of those people is, Nelda Sturm, who has decorated more than 4,000 lunch bags from her home, each one done thoughtfully, with a child in mind (Cothren, 2026).
At 87 years old, decorating bags has become more than a volunteer activity for Nelda. It’s a source of purpose (Cothren, 2026).
Today, as someone who uses a wheelchair most of the time, finding meaningful ways to contribute from home matters deeply. Decorating bags gives her days structure, creativity, and a sense of connection (Cothren, 2026).
As long as she’s able, she plans to keep decorating. She’s even shared bags at Senior Day events, inviting others to experience the same sense of fulfillment she’s found (Cothren, 2026).

For a child experiencing food insecurity, a decorated lunch bag says: You are seen. It turns an ordinary meal into a moment of warmth. And for volunteers, whether they’re students, families, coworkers, or older adults at home, it offers a simple, joyful way to make a real difference (Cothren, 2026).

Personalization of something as small as a lunch bag can help offset the burdens of food insecurity and improve a person’s overall experience. Similarly, even small opportunities for personalization or customization in medical devices could help patients feel a greater sense of comfort, control, or ownership over a medical experience that may otherwise feel intimidating or disruptive to their lives. Bringing human connection to food insecurity through personalized lunch bags has the potential to improve the attitudes and experiences of children facing difficult circumstances. This concept can be applied to my work with Battelle by exploring ways to make medical devices and services more customizable and personal, potentially creating experiences that better support patients’ emotional well-being alongside their physical needs.
