Diplo’s Run Club
Grammy-winning artist, producer and DJ Diplo began an entrepreneurship endeavor named Diplo’s Run Club, which is a 5K fitness-inducing music festival. With no age limits, entire families can participate in healthy activities together (Gratefulweb, 2026).
Fitness has always been a major part of Diplo’s life: for a man who travels 300 days a year, he squeezes in workouts no matter where he is in the world. Diplo originally came up with the idea for this event series after he ran the Miami half marathon and then found himself at the club with other runners craving a post-workout celebration (Gratefulweb, 2026).
Prioritizing health and wellness for runners, Diplo’s Run Club also provides unique health activations at each run. Each event features partner-led giveaways and experiences—from foot massages to strength testing games and more—presented by brands in various wellness categories such as footwear, athletic wear, supplements, energy drinks and cross-training (Gratefulweb, 2026).
“Music and fitness are such large parts of my life—it’s very special for me to be able to share both of those things with my fans together in one event. We had a hundred thousand people run and party with me last year; I can’t wait to do it with even more people this time around." (Diplo).
While the program is based in urban centers, I think its use of music and health is an interesting concept that could be applied to medical devices as a way to motivate and engage patients. The program effectively uses checkpoints to break a long run into smaller, more manageable sections, making the overall experience feel less overwhelming and more rewarding. This idea of breaking a difficult or lengthy task into smaller milestones could be valuable when designing medical devices or procedures that require patients to remain engaged for extended periods. Rather than focusing only on making a device more functional, I could consider how its interaction and experience could help make a difficult medical process feel more manageable.
From iconic stadiums and waterfront parks to historic venues and city landmarks, each stop delivers a one-of-a-kind event. As some medical conditions or procedures may be completely new experiences for a person, they can feel daunting and contribute to feelings of stress or depression.
The Run Club encourages fans to live a healthy and active lifestyle, and more than half of the participants across the events are first-time 5k runners (Gratefulweb, 2026).
I think there is an opportunity to apply this same idea of making a new experience feel approachable within the healthcare sector.
Run Club donates a portion of proceeds to the national nonprofit Good Sports, who provide equitable access to youth sports in high-need communities. In 2025, the Run Club donated 16,447 pieces of equipment, impacted 16,604 children and supported 45 youth organizations nationwide (Gratefulweb, 2026).
In the medical device industry, we could look at how different parts of a healthcare system are interconnected and how improving one aspect could create positive effects elsewhere. Rather than designing a device in isolation, this could mean considering how it interacts with patients, healthcare professionals, equipment, and existing care systems. This systematic approach is something I can consider in my capstone as I look for opportunities where one design intervention could address multiple challenges within rural healthcare.
