Rural communities across the United States face significant barriers to accessing healthcare, including hospital closures, long travel distances, and limited medical resources. Companies like Homeward are addressing these challenges by bringing healthcare directly to rural patients through mobile units, in-home visits, virtual care, and community-based support. Their approach demonstrates how healthcare can be redesigned to meet patients where they are, rather than requiring patients to travel to traditional medical facilities.

The bitter paradox of rural healthcare is that in the places where it’s needed most, there is very little of it. It’s been that way for a long, long time (Reardon, 2022).
“We’re really in a difficult time when it comes to access to care for rural communities,” said Alan Morgan, CEO of the National Rural Health Association. “In the last ten years alone we’ve seen 140 rural hospitals close across the United States” (Reardon, 2022).

According to West Michigan Fox News 17, rural hospitals have continued to close at a rate that disproportionately affects communities where residents tend to be older, sicker, and lower-income (Reardon, 2022). In response, companies like Homeward are developing new models for rural healthcare where “diagnostic tests on-the-go” are being brought to the communities (Reardon, 2022).

Homeward’s use of mobile and in-home care demonstrates how AI and digital technology can change the delivery of healthcare and help overcome geographic barriers. This made me realize that my capstone solution does not necessarily need to be a physical product. Instead, I could explore designing a service or system that addresses the broader challenges of accessing and delivering healthcare in rural and remote environments.
