An important factor to consider when trying to develop a circular economy is the need to add incentive and value to all that participate in such a system. Traditionally, this model has focused on small closed loops that prioritized physical commodities that could be directly used and shared amongst specific participants.

Now more than ever, we are seeing advanced technology being able to become integrated into those circular economies. Specifically when it comes to the integration of the internet, we are now able to use this interconnectivity to benefit our waste economies.

Groups of engineers, computer scientists, waste-management researchers, and others are expanding the way we recycle using a concept called the Internet-of-things.

IoT represents a network of devices capable of collecting, transmitting, and analyzing data in real time. In the context of waste management, this technology streamlines operations, from waste collection to material recycling. Smart devices installed in bins, vehicles, and recycling facilities offer unprecedented insights, helping to address inefficiencies and environmental challenges.

This sort of data distributions has its benefits for these sustainability initiatives and specifically the efficiency in which it works, but in terms of raising incentives and value for participation in circular economies, the data that these smart things collect becomes valuable leverage for the corporate participant, who would otherwise be more incentivized by economics rather than sustainability for the sake of it.

For municipalities, these consumer insights are invaluable. Data-driven campaigns can be designed to target specific neighborhoods or demographics, addressing areas with low recycling participation and driving community-wide improvements.

On the opposite side of this data collection, however, we see the additional concerns surrounding privacy.

IoT systems generate vast amounts of data, and protecting this information from cyber threats is paramount. Implementing robust cybersecurity measures is essential to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of collected data.

In applications where this has been implemented, however, data suggests that this technology being utilized does accomplish its goal of improving sustainability practices.

Copenhagen, Denmark, serves as a prime example. The city has implemented a smart waste management system where IoT-enabled sensors monitor bin fill levels and optimize collection routes. This initiative has reduced operational costs by 20% while significantly lowering carbon emissions.

Review

When it comes to things such as data collection, I think I tend to be in a minority when it comes to being concerned about data about me collected. It is absolutely scary when this information can potentially be used against you, but in terms of normal internet usage, and the more realistic scenario that someone is not going to use my data to threaten my well being, I can see the benefits of this. In particular, a large portion of data that is collected on the internet is used to create targeted algorithms and advertisements. Most people might feel hesitant about an “algorithm” knowing you, but I find it useful in helping find things on the internet that I appreciate, rather than an algorithm that is unrelated to my interests at all. Knowing that this is a general concern, in most instances of technological advancement, we face a gap where that technology, while useful, is also scary. It is new, and that fear of the unknown and unfamiliar one is a reasonable one. However, like many things in this sphere of sustainability and innovation, learning more about this unfamiliar thing, and promoting that knowledge, becomes instrumental in its ability to become mainstream.
