Special Interest Conjecture: Soma

Currently many health wearables are geared towards those with the goal of optimizing their athletic and recovery potential. However, the technology within these wearables have the potential to transform the preventative healthcare care sector. Wearables can currently track metrics like heart rate variability, blood oxygen saturation, and skin temperature among others. The use of these tracking capabilities in tandem with machine learning models can create a powerful personal assistant in managing one’s health. Soma would analyze collected data to provide users with personalized data driven nudges to reinforce positive behaviors. Over time, these behaviors could lead to healthier individuals, less healthcare service utilization, and greater savings for these individuals. With nearly 70% of healthcare providers reporting the use of predictive analytics or AI models to identify high risk patients and intercede before critical issues arise, there is a real and emerging use case for this technology.
