I created a survey about material perception to understand how people in design fields perceive Marble Plastics’ post-secondary recycled material. I focused on seniors in Interior Design and seniors in Architecture. I received 9 responses from 18 Interior Design students and 8 responses from 14 Architecture students. I collected these responses by visiting their classes during their scheduled meeting times and asking students if they would participate in my survey.

The graph above shows how the perception of the material changed when learning about its story.

  • Interior design students showed an increase in innovative and attractive, while industrial, experimental and unpredictable decreased.
  • Architect students showed an increase towards unique, innovative, and attractive while artistic and unpredictable decreased.

Across both groups, innovative and attractive increased, while unpredictable decreased. Interesting stayed the same.

Before learning the story behind the material, 11 out of 17 participants described its appearance as unpredictable. After learning that the material was made from Marble Plastics’ post-secondary waste, only 5 out of 17 still described it as unpredictable. This was an unexpected finding.
