The Dollhouse

The Melissa and Doug Dollhouse

The toy company Melissa and Doug released a new dollhouse, with a unique take on its design and its components. Instead of the dollhouse traditionally opening from the side, this dollhouse opens from the top. Allowing children to easily play with the Cherry characters and the other components included in the set.

"The set is made for Cheeries, but fits all her toys perfectly (even the vehicles)," (Tully Ellsworth, 2026).

"Parents know that if a toy only works with its own ecosystem, interest can fade fast," (Tully Ellsworth, 2026).

"Part of the appeal is that everything is designed for little hands. The wooden figures are lightweight enough for toddlers to manipulate independently, but they don't feel flimsy. They bend easily to sit in vehicles, perch on furniture, and move between different play scenarios without constant parental assistance," (Tully Ellsworth, 2026).

"Instead of a traditional open-front house, Cheery Lane opens from the top and folds into different configurations," (Tully Ellsworth, 2026).

Reflection

The Melissa and Doug dollhouse is a great representation of breaking the norms of a traditional dollhouse. Their unique approach to their design allows for an easy playing experience for children and parents are the pieces are accessible from the top. Can a product be designed that is easily transferable to other cars? Can the product capture the attention of not only the parent, but also the child for extended periods of time. Regarding the size of the project, can it be adjustable and change/adjust in size as the size of the child changes as they grow?
