The Attack Against a Self-Driving Vehicle
Self-Driving vehicle in San Francisco, California

A self-driving car in San Franscisco has been one of many attacks against self-driving vehicles. Although, during these attacks, individuals have been on the inside of the car while another individual on the exterior of the car is yelling at the car and trying to break into it. These self-driving vehicle attacks have left riders feeling uneasy as they are stuck in the car exterior of the vehicle is actively being "assaulted."

"In San Francisco, some passengers of autonomous taxis have experienced an unexpected hazard: being stuck in the vehicles when the cars are assaulted," (Griffith, 2026).
"Since autonomous cars started roaming San Francisco streets almost four years ago, they have elicited an array of reactions from humans, including angry protests against the vehicles. That has created an unexpected hazard for passengers of self-driving cars all around the city: being stuck inside the vehicle during an anti-robot rant," (Griffith, 2026).
"Waymo frequently emphasizes its safety compared with human drivers. Its data has shown a 90 percent decrease in “serious injury or worse crashes” for its cars compared with the average human driver over the same distance in cities where it operates," (Griffith 2026).
“As passengers, we deserve more safety than that if someone is trying to attack us,” he said. “This can’t be the policy to be trapped there," (Griffith 2026).

Reflection

Self-driving vehicles are helpful when an individual needs to get around town. It is an easy and efficient solution when the vehicle can drive themselves and people do not need to rely on other, real people. Although, the vehicle does pose a hazard to its passengers because it can drive itself. To individuals, this new technology does not align well with values. When the vehicle was getting harassed, there are only so many things' users can do to alleviate the situation. They can are unable to drive the car away because the car is self-driving, so they have to rely on the phone number to call a dispatcher to get assistance. I think having an option for individuals to drive the car manually, or having a more efficient connection point can help alleviate problems more quickly. Is there more that can be done on the company and user side on the interior of the car?
