The Hype of Self-Driving Cars

Autonomous electric vehicles are becoming a popular ride in many cities nowadays. Companies, such as Uber and Hyundai, are one of many companies making large investments to establish a self-driving vehicle under their companies name. It is through these companies putting these self-driving vehicles in city that allow individuals to their desired destination in a timely manner. These autonomous electric vehicles go by the name of Waymo, Zoox, etc., are becoming popular amongst residents of the city and visitors.

"The ride-hailing behemoth also announced on Thursday an agreement to possibly invest as much as $1.25 billion in electric-car maker Rivian for its planned autonomous vehicles," (Higgins, 2026).
"Meanwhile, the Alphabet CEO’s new comp plan is now tied, in part, to Waymo, the self-driving car unit that grew out of Google and helped ignite the original excitement for the technology," (Higgins, 2026).
"Companies are demonstrating how to connect users with the robot rides,"(Higgins, 2026).
Former chief executive of Uber, Travis Kalanick
"Part of scaling is figuring out how to deploy in ways that are cost-effective. These vehicles, with their expensive sensors and computers, are still pricey, even if the costs are coming down from lofty levels. Practically, that means the vehicles need to be used more than a traditional car running in a ride-hailing fleet," (Higgins, 2026).
Different versions of autonomous electric vehicles
"Under Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi, the company has adopted an aggressive strategy of signing deals to connect robots with riders in several cities. That includes Waymo in Austin, Texas, where it competes with Tesla’s own efforts to roll out a robotaxi service," (Higgins, 2026).

"The deal calls for an initial 10,000 robotaxis, beginning in 2028. That never happened. A few months later, one of Uber’s test vehicles struck and killed a woman outside of Phoenix. This led to a halt of the company’s testing and, eventually, Uber ended its in-house efforts as it focused on becoming profitable. Now that the swagger is back in the AV world, it is time to deliver on the visions made popular a decade ago," (Higgins, 2026).

Reflection

Autonomous electric vehicles are becoming popular. Regarding the interior of the vehicle of the car, how does the interior of the car look like compared to a normal car. Are there certain features implemented within these self-driving vehicles that give users the reassurance of feeling safe and secure within the autonomous electric vehicles? In addition, how will these companies' large investments truly benefit the communities these vehicles are implemented in? Autonomous electric vehicles raise a lot of questions, but only time will tell where this new technology goes from here.
