Tombot and Creature Shop create "hyper-realistic" robotic puppy for dementia patients
In this article from Dezeen, the design and architecture publication covers Tombot's "Jennie," a hyper-realistic robotic puppy created to comfort seniors living with dementia and other cognitive health challenges.
...Jennie was created by Tombot CEO Tom Stevens in response to his mother's dementia, which resulted in the pair re-homing a dog after she could no longer properly care for the pet. The robotic dog was presented this week at tech fair CES in Las Vegas.
According to Tombot, peer-reviewed studies indicate robotic animals have the capacity to ease the symptoms of dementia such as hallucinations or aggressive outbursts associated with the condition.

It is powered by a rechargeable battery, while a Smartphone app allows users to name their model and monitor engagement. Regular Jennie software updates will also be available according to Tombot.
Tombot also aims to register Jennies as "the first robotic puppies to be FDA-registered medical devices" to serve in hospitals and other care facilities.
This article demonstrated how an assistive medical device can succeed specifically because of its artistic and emotional design. Jennie isn't hidden behind clinical packaging, its entire function depends on looking and feeling like something warm and familiar. I've been carrying into my own project: that assistive tools for remote and rural medicine need to prioritize efficiency and function first. Jennie suggests the opposite may be true in certain contexts, that emotional design is the function, particularly for users who may be isolated, cognitively vulnerable, or wary of "medical" objects. It raises a question I want to explore: could an assistive device for rural healthcare borrow this same strategy, using familiar or comforting form language to increase trust and adoption in communities that may be skeptical of unfamiliar medical technology?
