Buying a gaming console usually starts with paying for the console and then buying the games you want to play. But Nintendo created another way to continue the experience through Nintendo Switch Online. Instead of only making money when someone buys a console or a game, Nintendo offers a membership where players continue paying to get access to different online features and benefits (Nintendo, n.d.).

I think this business model is really smart because I actually see it with my own siblings. They already own a Nintendo Switch and have different games, but they still pay for the online membership because they want access to the extra features that come with it. This shows how Nintendo turned something that could have been a one-time purchase into an ongoing service. It also gives players a reason to continue interacting with Nintendo even after they already bought the console and games (Nintendo, n.d.).

Introducing various services you can use when you join Nintendo Switch Online (Nintendo, n.d.).
By completing member-exclusive missions, such as playing online-compatible titles or participating in Game Trials, you can earn Platinum Points (Nintendo, n.d.).
Get even more out of Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch with online play, classic games, exclusive benefits and more – all available with a Nintendo Switch Online membership! (Nintendo, n.d.).
People who have a Nintendo Switch 2 can use the GameChat feature (Nintendo, n.d.).
You can play cooperatively or competitively with distant friends, family, and people from around the world (Nintendo, n.d.).

Reflection

Thinking about it now it's interesting how Nintendo turned something that could have been a one-time purchase into an ongoing service. Instead of the experience ending after buying the console and games, players are given more features and benefits if they choose to pay for the membership (Nintendo, n.d.).

I also think it's smart how Nintendo uses things like exclusive content, online features, and other benefits to make people want to keep their membership. Looking at it from a business perspective made me realize how subscriptions can help a company keep customers connected to the brand for a longer time instead of only depending on one-time purchases (Nintendo, n.d.).
