Worlds First Mass Produced Mycelium Door

Rebound partnered with architecture studio Det Levende Hus to create sustainable interior doors using cultivated fungi. They propose mycelium as a more sustainable option over the typical hardwoods that take much more time to grow. The fruits of this partnership will be installed in a low-impact housing project designed in Ramloese, Denmark.

Production

"The prototype door presents a smooth, silky surface texture, but the material can take on other natural tones and can also be covered with a layer of clay to provide an alternative finish"
"(T)he growing process developed by Rebound takes approximately two weeks and will allow the doors to be industrially produced."
"This mycelium core is enclosed within a timber frame constructed using reclaimed and surplus wood, including offcuts provided by Danish flooring manufacturer Dinesen."

When I first saw the image of the door, I personally was drawn to the texture because as a designer I like when craft and process are visible in a product.

However, my next thought was that this texture may be a harder sell for some, unless the are satisfied with the texture of the clay. I would be remiss if I didn't point out that this prediction is speaking specifically from an American perspective.

The designers' goal may be to mass produce these doors to be used in architectural projects in places with similar tastes or where bio-material has already been introduced to the public as successful, like the projects the author mentions at the end of the article, and are not interested in entering the American market.

"It's about more than sustainability," added Suzuki-Højrup. "It's about how natural materials can transform our experience of space; visually, acoustically, even emotionally, when they're considered from the outset."

I couldn't agree more with this statement. The alternative bio-materials give the feeling of a modernized underground home, balancing a cozy environment with a deeper connection to nature.
